You Had Us at Michigan...
According to the recent Thrillist article “The Definitive and Final Ranking of All 50 States,” Michigan was named the #1 state of them all! Well, we do have just about everything here, so this accolade shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone living in the mitten state. While the media has focused on negative aspects of certain areas like Detroit (which is now on the rebound), Michigan has also received widespread positive press lately – which the Newhall Klein team believes is truly well-deserved! These are some reasons why we love Michigan:
In few other places are the four seasons better expressed than in Michigan. For Katie Marcelletti (Administrative Assistant), they are what she loves most about the state, with fall being her favorite. And for good reason, as fall is the season of picturesque trees, intimate bonfires, and spirited football weekends.
During summer, Michigan is perfect for outdoor activities. The plethora of lakes make perfect backdrops for spending a weekend in a cottage up north boating, water skiing, golfing, and simply enjoying the company of family and friends. This is Sandy Klein’s (President) and Brent Koster’s (Intern) favorite time of year.
Come wintertime, the ample snow sets the stage for skiing, snowboarding, hockey, and sledding. The diversity of seasonal festivities is a key part of what makes Michigan “A great place to raise a family,” as Sandy would say.
Everyone knows about Michigan’s abundance of lakes, but did you know that Michigan has the most shoreline of any continental state and second most of all states after Alaska? “You can walk on any shoreline anywhere in the state,” says Randon Chisnell (Interactive Designer).
Aside from “crystal clear” lakes, as Brent Koster (Intern) puts it, the landscape is equally magnificent. According to Jason Julien (Creative Director), geographic diversity is a huge part of Michigan’s charm. You can soak in the majesty of the forests, the Porcupine Mountains, and various beaches… all in a day's time! As you can imagine, the state is chock full of picturesque state parks. “Ludington and Muskallonge Lake are my favorites,” says Sue Sobeck (Business Manager).
Michigan has earned a reputation as a major hotspot for craft beer, ranking 5th nationally for the number of breweries per state, with Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids being voted “Beer City USA” since 2012. At NK, we’re quite vocal about our pride for our state’s concentration of nationally renowned breweries including Founders Brewing Company and Bell's Brewery. Chris Wachiralappaitoon (Junior Copywriter) goes so far as to say that his three favorite things about Michigan are the local beers Bell's The Oracle DIPA, Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, and Dark Horse Plead the 5th!
And what better way to enjoy all those brews than during sports games? With many great universities and colleges all over the state, including the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, campus rivalries couldn't be more spirited in Michigan. For the big leagues, Detroit is home to the Tigers, the Lions, the Pistons, and the Red Wings. Our Business Manager, Sue, is a big fan of the Detroit Tigers in particular.
NK is proud to call Michigan home, and the main reason is because of all the wonderful people who live here. “The best part about Michigan for me is the people. I've left Michigan a couple of times but always end up coming back, because I love it here,” says Creative Director Jason. “Michiganders are laid back but hard working. When there's a job to do, we get it done, but we also know how to have fun,” Tyler Smith (Account Director) explains. “People in Michigan treat each other as acquaintances, and it doesn’t break social norm to simply say hello to someone,” adds Intern Brent.
Michigan is simply a great state. Apparently, some would even call it the greatest state. Of course, such claims are just a matter of opinion, but we can’t help but root for our home turf. And perhaps you have to have grown up here to fully appreciate the beauty of the various towns and cities this state has to offer. Andrea Wilson (Account Manager) fell in love with the Upper Peninsula. Rich Swenor (Graphic Designer) calls his hometown, Petoskey, a snow globe with “million dollar sunsets.” Leslie Chamberlain (Project Manager) often loses herself in the splendor of Traverse City and Mackinac Island.
Do you love Michigan as much as we do? Share your reasons with us in the comments! Do you consider another state to be the best? If so, tell us why you think it’s worthy of that title!
