No Small Feat

A lot can happen in 30 years. Industries change, technology advances, culture shifts – and businesses grow (or fail). Reflecting on this 30th anniversary milestone as an agency has put into perspective just how rare of a feat that is. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 30% of businesses will survive their 10th year, and I suspect significantly fewer make it past their 30th year. So how did NK do it?

The Art of the Intangible

Certainly, much of our success is a credit to Sandy’s good business sense early on – identifying a need in the market, putting together the right team to do the work, closely managing company finances and listening to our clients. However, beyond the nuts and bolts of running a solid business, I believe there have always been less tangible factors at play. Such as the art of building the best teams. Sandy and I often talk about what makes a successful NK team member, and it typically comes down to one question: “Do they get it?”

Caring to the Core

‘Getting it’ is a combination of hard work, resourcefulness, expertise, intuition and empathy. Ultimately it comes down to people who care. Care enough to make it easy for our clients to work with NK. Care enough to engage fully with the work and with one another. Care enough to connect with our clients as business partners and individuals. Care enough that our clients don’t think of going anywhere else.

I have the unique task of building upon the foundation laid out over the past 30 years and setting the course for the next 30, and it’s a responsibility I take to heart with great optimism. We understand that what got us where we are today will not necessarily get us where we’re going tomorrow. We know we must evolve and adapt without losing sight of who we are at our core – people who get it, people who care.
