5 Tips to Spark Your Creativity
Are you feeling stuck in a rut? Can’t seem to get the gears in your head to turn in unison? That creative juice that once flowed so freely has seemed to run dry? Creativity is a fickle friend - it often seems to desert us just when we need it most. Thankfully, there are a few things you can control to help coax your creativity out of hiding.
Break from the Norm
When your routine becomes a little too, well, routine, it’s time to shake things up. Get away from your desk for an afternoon and work from a common area, coffee shop, or even outdoors if the weather’s nice. You might be surprised how changes to your environment will lead to little unexpected moments of inspiration.
If changing your work area is a bit too extreme, try modifying minor parts of your daily routine. For example, take a different route to work, switch up your lunch routine, or try swapping tea for coffee. These disruptions, while minor, can help make a difference.
Change your Tunes
Changing up the music that keeps you moving is a great way to get into a different headspace. Need a confidence boost? Try some old school hip hop. Need to expand your mind? Both experimental electronica and free jazz can do the trick. Sometimes, simply blasting your favorite summer jam can pull you right out of your slump. Just make sure you’re switching up your playlist on a regular basis - the last thing you want are those Bootsy Collins bass lines on repeat getting you into a creative funk.
Are you finding yourself cycling through the same old solutions time and time again? Have an idea that seems a little too “out there?” Afraid you might fall from 20,000 feet after blastoff? Get over your fear and take a risk! Push through your initial hesitation and bring your crazy ideas to life - after all, groundbreaking ideas don’t come from playing it safe. Next time you’re slogging through the mundane, throw a bit of caution to the wind and try out that wacky idea!
Break it Off (Temporarily)
Sleep on it, take a siesta, have an inspirational beverage. However you approach it, sometimes the most effective remedy to your creative woe is separating yourself from your work. Easier said than done, but if you’re looking for shiny new ideas, you need to approach your work with a fresh and rested brain. In addition to ensuring your mind is at its sharpest, a relaxed approach can prevent you from trying to force an idea that just isn’t right.
